Bell Canada Server Hack

A hacking group known as NullCrew recently hacked into Bell Canada servers. The group is known for its campaign, which it named – “F the System” – that was set on attacking governments and big business systems.

It is notably remembered for dumping data that it claimed to have taken from the US Department of Defense site, MasterCard, defense.gov and BB&T on e-zine in December 2012. In this case, the hackers breached the sites and made IP addresses and other private server details public. Their breach was termed as a serious embarrassment to the affected organizations especially the military organization. Following these attacks the group was quiet for a while.

However, on January 10th 2014, it reared its ugly head once again with the members of the hacking group claiming that they had hidden for far too long and that it was time to remind people that they were still around. This announcement was followed five days later by a tweet stating that they had been successful hacking Internet service providers.

Bell Canada Releases Statement Stating Passwords And Usernames Were Compromised

On 31st January, the group posted a tweet that seemed to indicate there they had successfully hacked into a Canadian ISP system. Two days later, Bell Canada confirmed this when it released a statement indicating that it had lost 22,421 passwords and usernames from its system. However, it denied that the data was lost as a result of hacking by NullCrew.

This was later to be refuted by NullCrew, and they proved their story by providing evidence that they had informed Bell Canada of a breach in their security, which the company did not take heed of. They then decided to make the breach a public affair. The hackers claim that even after informing the company of the breach in their systems, the company did not take any action for two weeks until they released the information to the world at which point they decided to do something about the breach.

The ISP responded to the accusations from NullCrew by stating that the servers hacked did not belong to them but to a third party provider known as Magma Communications. The question remains, did Bell Canada systems get hacked by NullCrew or not.
